CNY

Although decorations can be seen everywhere in families, and on the streets, families are seen going here and there to go their relatives' or friends' homes to 'bai nian', yet I don't really feel any sense of the CNY atmosphere.

Why is it so?

First of all, I don't really visit other relatives' homes to 'bai nian' as there are not many relatives's homes my family could go to. Either they went into Malaysia or just for some other reasons, can't go and that's it.

Second, reunion dinner hasn't been really reunion ever since all my grandparents have passed away. Now it'll only be a gathering of my family and my aunt, and no more. Grandparents used to be the only reason why families gathered but now, to them, it seems no point anymore.

It's a rather sad situation but that's reality and how harsh humanity could be.

There's only 2 situations where you can see different families gathering together: wedding and funeral. There's no need for further explanation to the reasons as to why only these 2 situations would there be a gathering of families.

So, are Singaporeans still valuing the traditional celebration of CNY? Maybe yes? Maybe no?

Some are escaping it by going overseas. Some just create the 'disappearing act' by becoming incontactable. Some have big familes gathering for reunion dinner where one table is often not enough to accomodate everyone. Some just have a plain reunion dinner.

No one can give the answer for certain. It's up to each to decide the meaning of CNY.
